Several correspondents have written for my opinion anent the new British Esperanto Association.

The success or non-success of the undertaking largely rests on its ability to convince the British Esperantist that it is to his or her advantage, social or financial, to become a Member of the Association direct, as well as participating with a local group, under a capitation fee. This advantage may not be apparent at first sight, but I firmly believe that, with efficient management, it will be realised by those who are public-spirited enough to become Members of the central body. Correspondence Bureau, Hotel arrangements, Commercial Exchange and Mart, Lending Library, Social Gatherings, Examination facilities, etc., should bring a large and increasing membership.

But it is absolutely necessary that the enterprise be begun with courage and determination. No success may be reasonably expected unless a permanent office be engaged, and an Assistant (paid) Secretary be appointed, who may be always in attendance there to answer inquiries. If its promoters are contemplating a less venturesome line of action, I am strongly of opinion that the proposed Association will be at best but a weak measure, and end in disaster. The only excuse for this latter course would be an unfortunate lack of funds.

Will not some one among our friends, well provided with this world’s goods, be disposed to generously advance a small sum (at interest, if needs be) sufficient to start the Association in a manner befitting its comprehensive title? Personally I greatly regret that, as announced at the Inaugural Meeting, I have not the leisure to take any official part in the work of this desirable organisation, but heartily wish it every success.

Voĉo el la Himalajo.—Eble, pro la konata disvastiĝo de la kara lingvo, vi ne miros lerni, ke Hinda monaĥo, loĝante en la soleco de la Himalajo, sesdek mejlojn for de la fervojo, kaj multaj mejloj malproksime eĉ de poŝtoficejo, allogiĝis je ĝiaj ĉarmoj.

Ŝajnas al mi, ke Esperanto rilatas tiel al la mondaj lingvoj, kiel Vedanto rilatas al la religioj de la mondo. Esperanto donas internacian lingvon al la parolantoj de ĉiaj lingvoj, kiel faras Vedanto, donante al ĉiaj religianoj komunan spiriton, aŭ religian subapogon.

Plue, tiel en la unu oni ne devas forlasi sian nacian lingvon, tiel, en la alia, oni ne devas forlasi sian religion.

Saĝe diris Max Muller: "Vedanto havas spacon por preskaŭ ĉiaj religioj, ne, ĝi ĉirkaŭprenas ĉiujn."

Kaj, aliloke li skribas: "Samtempe mi ne faras sekreton ke, tutan mian vivon, mi tre ŝatas Vedanton. Mi plene povas konsenti kun Schopenhauer, kaj tute kompreni tion, kion li signifis, kiam li diris: ‘En la tuta mondo ne estas ellernado, krom tiu de la originalo (de Upaniŝadoj) tiel helpanta, kiel tiu de la Upaniŝadoj mem. Ĝi estas la paco de mia vivo, ĝi estos la paco de mia morto.’ Kaj mi nek timas, nek bedaŭras diri, ke mi partaĝas lian entuziasmon por Vedanto, kaj mi sentas, ke mi ŝuldas al ĝi pro multoj, kiuj helpis min en mia paso tra la vivo."

Mi finos tiujn ĉi malmultajn liniojn kun verso el Sanskrita preĝo, komune uzita inter Hindoj: "La universaj religioj de la mondo, ĉiuj elvenas el malsama vidpunkto, kaj ĉiuj demandas por si bonegecon kaj sanegecon, sed, kia ajn estu la vojo, rekte aŭ malrekte, oni iras laŭ sia ŝato. Vi, Ho Dio! estas ilia sola fino, kiel la oceano estas la sola fino de la riveroj."
