Sacred Hymns from the German Translated by Frances Elizabeth Cox
love inspire
The joyful choir,
While to the God of love glad hymns it raises.
Exalt his name!
With joy proclaim,
God loved the world, and through his Son forgave us;
Oh! what are we,
That, Lord, we see
Thy wondrous love, in Christ who died to save us!
Behold our Friend
His love commend,
In that when foes he died to reconcile us;
Our flesh he took,
His throne forsook,
That from his kingdom God might not exile us.
Your refuge place
In his free grace,
Trust in his name, and day by day repent you;
Ye mock God’s word,
Who call him Lord,
And follow not the pattern He hath lent you.
O Christ, to prove
For Thee my love,
Thee in the poor I’ll clothe, and feed, and cherish;
To every heart
Sweet hope impart,
When worn with care, with sorrow nigh to perish.
Heaven and earth
Received their birth
From Thee, in whom both strength and wisdom blended;
Both heart and voice
In thee rejoice,
And every knee in grateful prayer is bended.
Then praise the Lord!
He’ll help afford,
And comfort him by whom his name’s esteemed;
Hallelujah!
Hallelujah!
Rejoice in Christ, and praise him ye redeemed!
LIED AUFS FEST DER BESCHNEIDUNG.
Christus ist des Gesetzes Ende:
Wer an Ihn glaubt, der ist gerecht.
Freut euch, Sünder, allerwegen,
Ja sei fröhlich alle Welt,
Weil heut anhebt zu erlegen
Gottes Sohn das Lösegeld.
Das Gesetz wird heut erfüllt,
Heut wird Gottes Zorn gestillt;
Heut macht uns, die sollten sterben,
Gottes Sohn zu Gottes Erben.
Wer mag recht die Gnad erkennen!
Wer mag dafür dankbar sein!
Herz und Mund soll stets dich nennen
Unsern Heiland, Jesulein:
Deine Güte wollen wir
Nach Vermögen preisen hier,
Weil wir in der Schwachheit wallen:
Dort soll dein Lob besser schallen.
HYMN FOR THE CIRCUMCISION.
Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.
Rom. x. 4.
Mortals, who have God offended,
Sinners all, rejoice to-day!
Gods own Son, from heaven descended,
Now your ransom ’gins to pay:
See the law this day fulfill’d,
God’s just wrath and vengeance still’d;
He for sin who would have slain us,
Now for sons and heirs hath ta’en us.
Well may we this grace and favour
Evermore with blessings tell!
Well may heart and mouth for ever
Hail Thee our Immanuel!
Here in weakness while we stay,
Lord, we praise Thee as we may;
Earthly bonds our tongues here fetter,
But in heaven we’ll praise Thee better.
EPIPHANIASLIED.
Ich bin die Wurzel des Geschlechts Davids:
Ein heller Morgenstern.
Im Abend blinkt der Morgenstern,
Die Weisen nahen sich von fern;
Im Niedergang entsteht ein Licht,
Das kennet keinen Aufgang nicht.
Es strahlet aus der Ewigkeit,
Und senket sich hier in die Zeit;
Sein heller Glanz vertreibt die Nacht,
Aus Finsterniss wird Tag gemacht.
O Jesu, heller Morgenstern,
Leucht in die Näh und in die Fern,
Dass du auch seist zu unsrer Zeit
Von uns erkannt und benedeit.
HYMN FOR THE EPIPHANY.
I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and Morning Star.
Rev. xxii. 16.
The wondering sages trace from far
Bright in the west the Morning-star;
A light illumes the western skies,
Seen never in the east to rise.
Eternity produced its blaze,
Time’s fulness hails its nearer rays;
Its brightness chases night away,
And kindles darkness into day.
O Jesu! brightest Morning-star!
Shed forth thy beams both near and far,
That all, in these our later days,
May know Thee, and proclaim thy praise.
LIED FÜR DEN CHARFREITAG. I.
Er ist um unsrer Missethat willen verwundet,
Und um unsrer Sünde willen zerschlagen.
Herzliebster Jesu, was hast du verbrochen,
